Hit the record button for NAS Library

Under current Copyright legislation, television broadcasts may be recorded and added to our library collection by NAS staff, provided some copyright specific information including the broadcast channel, and copying date are recorded on the copy.
The NAS Library monitors and records relevant arts programs as part of its collection development, but you can help!
If you plan to be watching a particularly interesting or relevant production, make us a copy, ensuring you make note of the date and channel of broadcast, and you will reimbursed with the video or DVD you used to make the copy, kudos from the library staff, and the satisfaction you have made our collection even greater.

For more info on the copyright of off-air recordings see:

State Library database access from home!

Earlier this year the State Library of New South Wales ran a trial of offsite access to selected databases . This now appears to be a permanent service from the State Library.

At first glance the list of databases available doesn't look like they will be much use for NAS students/staff - but don't be fooled! There are some real gems tucked away in there, if you know where to look.

My two faves are :INFORMIT and ProQuest 5000

INFORMIT is a group of databases that includes APAIS -FT (Australian Public Affairs Information Service - Full Text). APAIS-FT is a database/index of more than 2000 Australian periodicals.

APAIS-FT includes the full text (that's right, download the article here and now!) for the following art journals:

  • Art & Australia
  • Art Asia Pacific
  • Artlink
  • Australian Art Education
  • Photofile
  • Ceramics
  • Craft Arts International

Proquest 5000 is a suite of databases that includes the Academic Research Library. This American online database indexes over two thousand periodicals which provide information on a broad range of general reference subjects including arts, business, humanities, social sciences, and the sciences.

It has full text for the following art journals:
  • African Arts
  • American Artist
  • The Art Bulletin (NY)
  • Art Education
  • Artforum
  • Art History (London)
  • Art in America
  • Art Journal
  • Ceramics, art and perception
  • Ceramic Industry
  • Modernism/Modernity

To access this service you must be a registered reader at the State Library. You can register online and they will post you a readers' card with an unique number (this takes about 10 days).

Or drop in to the State Library next time you are in the city and they will set you up with an account - but make sure you take some ID, preferably something with an address, with you.

If you already have a readers' card, you can log-in straight away. There have been some changes to the access requirements since the trial. Readers now have to set up a unique password that links to their readers card.

If you can, have a play around with these over the break. That way you will feel confident about using them when it comes time to start researching for essays etc next year.

If you are feeling totally confused by it all, come and see me. I am quite happy to spend some time going through the whole set-up to get you started.

The NAS library will also be running some lunchtime research skills sessions in first semester 2007. So if you want to brush up on your library style research make sure you attend.

Happy Birthdays!

Melbourne Cup day gave us several reasons to celebrate here - but unfortunately none of them involved large winnings at the TAB...

Happy Birthday to Librarian Elizabeth Little;
Happy Birthday to Acting Director and Head of Studies Geoff Ireland (our boss);
And Happy Birthday to the library - we've now been in this fantastic building for a year!

What better reasons to raise a glass or two?

In this book, which accompanies the Whitney Museum's 1997 Diebenkorn retrospective exhibition, the most comprehensive survey of his work ever held, Diebenkorn emerges as an artist who restored to late modernism the sense of the sublime that seemed to fade with each successive decade after World War II.
