The art prize merry-go-round is in full swing this month with a wide variety of opportunities available to earn some money, prestige, recognition or just to gain some experience. With such a plethora of prizes the tricky thing is not to miss the closing dates! Here is a selection that you will need to enter within the next month if you want to participate:
William Fletcher Grants
The William Fletcher Grants (minimum $1000) are awarded annually to outstanding visual arts students who demonstrate excellence in painting, drawing, printmaking or stage design. Applicants must be Australian citizens, enrolled in full-time study in final year of an undergraduate course of Art/Design studies at a nominated tertiary institution in New South Wales. Applicants are assumed to be in need of financial assistance. The official contact person at NAS is John Bloomfield, Head of Painting. NSW Parliament Plein Air Painting Prize
A $20 000 acquisitive prize, the winning work will enter the permanent collection of the New South Wales Parliament. The prize aims to recognise the great tradition of Australian Artists working outdoors in New South Wales. Newtown Community Annual Art Exhibition
Run by the Newtown Mission this grassroots art prize is now in its third year. Categories inlcude Painting, Photography, and Jewellery/Fashion with the winner of each receiving $600. There is also a prize of $700 for the best work by a Newtown resident and a People's Choice Award consisting of some very useful art materials! Olive Cotton Award 2008
The Olive Cotton Award is an annual award for excellence in photographic portraiture offering a $10 000 major prize, funded by Cotton’s family in memory of “one of Australia's leading twentieth century photographers” (Art Gallery NSW, 2000). The Friends of the Tweed River Art Gallery have sponsored additional Directors Choice awards to the value of $2,000. All awards are acquisitive with the winning works becoming part of the Tweed River Art Gallery’s “Australian Portrait Collection”. For more information or to download an entry form visit the website. 2008 Fletcher Jones Art Prize
Artists are invited to submit applications for the $30 000 acquisitive painting prize held by the Geelong Gallery. You will need to scroll to the bottom right of their home page to access the application form (beware - it is easy to miss otherwise!) Entries close 30th May.
2008 Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize
The Waterhouse is Australia’s richest prize for Natural History Art, boasting a total prize pool of $107,500. Each year entries are invited in three categories: Paintings, Works on Paper and Sculpture & Objects. Entry forms and further details are available on the website. Entries close 30th May.
