April Art Competitions

Hunters Hill Art Exhibition and Prize
A $5000 cash prize for the winner and also a number of other smaller prizes are on offer. For full listing of categories and requirements see the website. Entries close 16 April.

The NSW Parliament Plein Air Painting Prize
Artists are invited to submit up to two paintings made ‘en plein air’ of a New South Wales subject, painted at any time, for consideration for the Prize. The Prize is acquisitive and the winning entry will receive $20 000. More information available online. Entries close 14th-16th April.

Fletcher Jones Art Prize
An acquisitive painting prize of $30 000 conducted by the Geelong Gallery. Entries close 30th April. Further information available on the gallery website.

Entry forms and information are also on display in the library (check the noticeboard on level one near the big tables!).

The State Library of NSW has recently expanded its list of 'offsite access' databases to include:

Art Full Text

This full text bibliographic database indexes and abstracts articles from English language periodicals, yearbooks and museum bulletins, as well as periodicals published in French, Italian, German, Japanese, Spanish, Dutch, and Swedish. Subjects covered include antiques, archaeology, architecture and architectural history, art history, computers in art, crafts, fashion design, folk art, graphic arts, interior design, landscape architecture, films, painting, photography, pottery, sculpture, and textiles.

It includes journals such as Art Bulletin, Art History, Artforum International, Art in America, ArtUS, Art Journal, Art Monthly, Art and Christianity, Art on Paper, Art Criticism, Art AsiaPacific, Art Review, Blind Spot, British Art Journal, British Journal of Photography, Ceramics Review, Chicago Art Journal, Ceramics Monthly, Domus, European Journal of Archaeology, Film Quarterly, Flash Art, October, Parkett...

Art Full Text has recent issues of journals available for searching. For example the most recent issue of ArtForum International available is February 2010.

Art Retrospective

Art Retrospective Index 1929-1984 is an important online resource for research in the fields of fine arts, architecture, the decorative arts and related disciplines and complements and extends the coverage provided by Art Full Text (1984 onwards).

William Fletcher Grants

The William Fletcher Grants are now open for 2010. These are awarded annually to outstanding young visual arts students who demonstrate excellence in painting, drawing, printmaking or stage design.

The William Fletcher Trust (now the William Fletcher Foundation) was established in 1985 to celebrate the life and to commemorate the work of William Ernest Maurice Fletcher (1924-1983), painter and printmaker, whose integrity as an artist was not compromised by his material difficulties and lifetime fight with cardiac asthma.

Splendour in the Grass Arts Initiative

In partnership with Lismore Regional Gallery, NORPA, Arts Northern Rivers and the Australia Council, SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS is excited to announce the launch of this year's SPLENDID Arts Initiative.

SPLENDID is seeking young and emerging artists for two weeks of bending art forms and collaboration to create new works for SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS.

SPLENDID is open to artists under 30 years of age or in the first 5 years of their practice, who work in visual arts, theatre, dance, design, installation, architecture, digital media, sound, text, community arts and other creative pursuits. The program includes a residential Arts Lab, mentorship and opportunities to promote your work to major festival audiences in Australia and internationally.

2010 Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award

Entries are now open for the 2010 Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award for prints and artists' books in any print medium. Prizes include a $12000 acquisitive prize, $5000 non-acquisitive, $6000 acquisition fund prize, and a $300 people's choice award. Closing date for entries is 14th June 2010.

A sample entry form is on display on the exhibition noticeboard on level one in the library. Further details available soon on the Fremantle Arts Centre website.

More State Library databases

The State Library of NSW has added more 'offsite access' databases to their e-resources! These include the EbscoHost databases:

Academic Search Complete
Academic Search Complete is a scholarly, multi-disciplinary full-text database, with more than 6,100 full-text periodicals, including more than 5,100 peer-reviewed journals. In addition to full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for more than 10,100 journals and a total of more than 10,600 publications including monographs, reports, conference proceedings, etc.

MasterFILE Premier
MasterFILE Premier contains full text periodicals covering general reference, business, health, education, general science, multicultural issues, etc. It also contains full text for reference books, biographies, primary source documents, and an Image Collection of photos, maps & flags.

Australia/NZ Reference Centre
The Australia/New Zealand Reference Centre contains Australia/New Zealand magazines, newspapers and newswires, reference books, biographies, photographs, maps and flags.
Titles include: Architecture Australia, Australian Geographic, Australian Women's Weekly, Inside Rugby, The Australian (National), The Daily Telegraph (Sydney), The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney), The Sydney Morning Herald (Sydney), Encyclopedia of Australia, History of Australia, etc.

Ceramics, Painting, Sculpture: Prizes and Competitions

Looking for a listing of current art prizes and competitions now calling for entries? Check out the dedicated noticeboard on level one (upstairs near the big desks) of the library. Here is a selection of prizes closing soon:

The Gallipoli Art Prize
Acquisitive prize with the winner receiving $20 000 for a work executed in oil, acrylic, water colour or mixed. Closing date: 22-23 March 2010. For more details see the website.

Sculpture Exhibition and Prize: Sawmillers Reserve McMahons Point
Non-acquisitive prize of $10 000 for medium-sized exterior sculptures and installations. Entries close: 30 March 2010. Further details available online.

Sidney Myer Australian Ceramic Award
This prize has categories for International, Australian, and Emerging (producing artist for less than ten years) ceramicists. As well as cash components up to $25 000, winners will also produce work for exhibition at the Shepparton Art Gallery with one work selected to enter the collection. Closing date: 2 April 2010.
