Art21: Art in the 21st Century is an award-winning series of programmes in which 100 contemporary artists explain their creations, their creative processes, and their perceptions of art.

Art 21: Power

From politics to mass media, the theme of power pervades daily life and is reflected in the ideas and concerns of contemporary artists. Art21 documentary Power explores the work of the artists Cai Guo-Qiang, Laylah Ali, Krzysztof Wodiczko, and Ida Applebroog, and concludes with an original video artwork by Teresa Hubbard / Alexander Birchler. Power humanises difficult issues as artists become witnesses and seek to achieve a balance between constructive and destructive energies.

Art 21: Fantasy

Fantasy presents the works of American artist Jeff Koons, German photographer Florian Maier-Aichen, American painter Mary Heilmann and Chinese media artist Cao Fei in an exploration of bringing the imagination to life in unconventional ways. Jeff Koons examines the ethical and spiritual dimensions of art through his computer-aided hand-made sculptures and paintings. Mary Heilmann offers her perspectives on how her spirituality shapes the function of her abstract art installations. The episode explores surrealism through the photography of Florian Maier-Aichen, whose works are digitally altered to separate them from reality. Cao Fei's surrealist multimedia projects blend documentary and magical-realism in a study of the different aspects of role-playing, such as costumes and avatars.
